Sabelt, a world leader in the development and production of passive safety components and technical clothing for racing, introduces a new F1 seat belt. For 2009, thanks to the use of new materials, seat belt weight has been reduced by 20%, going from about 870 grams for the entire system to only 685 grams, aiming to reach 550 within this season. This development is due to the necessity to reduce the weight of many components mainly because the introduction of KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) increased the total car weight by about 35 kg.
The 2009 seat belts, developed by the Sabelt Research and Development department in cooperation with F1 technicians and pilots, are made of new materials like magnesium alloy, titanium and composite materials.x
